NY Times Features Sensor Networks
NEON, RiverNet, and EarthScope are among the projects highlighted in "A Web of Sensors, Taking Earth's Pulse," a story featured in the New York Times science section, May 10, 2005. Science reporter William J. Broad reviews developments on the frontier of ecological research: "The rapid miniaturization of technologies behind cameras, cellphones and wireless communications is allowing scientists to build innovative networks of small sensors that they say will produce a new era of ecological insight and, in time, help save the planet." NEON's Co-Director Bruce Hayden, quoted in the Times article, speaks to the future: "We have to be prepared for the kinds of changes that will happen in the next century. We have to know the dynamics of the living world."
