The James Reserve: A Test Bed for Ecological Sensors

Researchers based in the San Jacinto Mountains of Southern California have been testing a variety of wireless and robotic networked instruments since the CENS Terrestrial Ecology Observing System Laboratory was established at the James Reserve in 2002. The suite of instruments now in place includes acoustic animal sensors, aquatic sensors, and instruments for collecting root, soil, and fungi data at microscopic scales. The James Reserve website has live webcams to access views of nest boxes, feeder stations, and other highlights on the landscape. They have recently developed an overlay for use with Google Earth that includes sensor locations and access to live data.
