Macrosystems Biology Call for Proposals

NSF has recently identified continental-scale ecology as a critical priority for scientific advancement. On April 8, they announced a new Macrosystems Biology call for proposals.

Macrosystems program funding will provide support for new, interdisciplinary investigations designed to “detect, understand, and forecast the consequences of climate and land use change and invasive species on the biosphere at regional to continental scales.”

The NEON facility has been designed to support these types of large-scale scientific questions by providing continental-scale data, information and unique physical facilities for researchers, educators and environmental managers. Macrosystems program funding may support studies to develop science that might eventually use NEON infrastructure or data, or measurements that could complement NEON programming. As an NSF Facility, NEON will provide infrastructure to the scientific and educational communities, including future research projects, Centers and other activities related to the study of macrosystems.

Please send questions to macrosystems@neoninc.org.

Other relevant solicitations
The recent NSF solicitation for an Environmental Synthesis Center mentions NEON, OOI and other NSF observatories as potential partners. NEON is excited to provide transformational capabilities in support of current or potential future NSF solicitations and welcomes inquiries from prospective Principal Investigators. NSF’s proposed investment in NEON infrastructure, and particularly data and data management capability, workflow environment for complex models and algorithms and data publishing capability, would be available to a Synthesis Center. As an NSF Facility, NEON will provide infrastructure to the scientific and educational communities, including future research projects, Centers and other activities. However, as an NSF-supported Implementing Organization, NEON, Inc. cannot offer exclusive support to any proposal in any way that would unfairly affect the outcome of competition. Please contact the NEON Principal Investigator with any inquiries (dschimel@neoninc.org).
