Systems Engineer

The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON, Inc.), a nonprofit science corporation dedicated to understanding how changes in climate, land use and invasive species impact ecology, has an immediate opening for a Systems Engineer in Boulder, Colorado. The Systems Engineer (SE) will apply systems engineering processes and skills to systematically convert customer needs into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. The successful candidate will be responsible for systems engineering planning, scheduling, and execution of requirements analysis, system design, analyses and trade studies, hardware/software design oversight, requirements verification, system integration, and system level testing.

The SE will support project risk management activities and must have demonstrated leadership and communication skills, a thorough knowledge of systems engineering practices and experience delivering solutions from concept to deployment.

Responsibilities

• Estimate, plan, schedule, and execute systems engineering activities
• Define the operational concepts
• Perform analyses and trade studies as necessary to aid in the selection of system concepts
• Integrate specialty engineering disciplines into a project team
• Define and document the top level system requirements
• Review and validate system verification requirements
• Allocate system requirements to hardware/software and oversee development/refinement of lower-level requirements
• Support the project team in defining and documenting the system architecture and design
• Perform hardware/software integration planning and oversee activities
• Perform system level test planning and oversee test implementation
• Perform technical risk management activities

Education/Experience:

• A minimum of a Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field
• Advanced Engineering degree a plus
• A minimum of 5 years in a leadership role and responsible for system definition/development
• A minimum of 10-15 years overall engineering experience in the design and development of large government programs with an operational life of 25+ years • DOD experience preferred

Specialized Skills:

• Certified Systems Engineering Professional by INCOSE
• Experience with one or more of the following:
o CRADLE from 3SL
o CORE from Vitech
o DOORS from Telelogic
o Rational Requisite Pro from IBM
o X-Tie from Teledyne Brown
• Familiarity with the Systems Engineering process
• Knowledge and experience in system and software architecture development
• Knowledge base of both hardware and software development
• Knowledge and experience in the definition and traceability of system requirements
• Knowledge and experience in the definition of system requirements verification methods
• Knowledge and experience in the planning of system test activities
• Proposal experience, including high-level system definition, pricing, and descriptive writing
• Demonstrate people-oriented management expertise and practices
• Proficient oral and written communication skills — required to deal with customers/user, members of a technical team, and internal management
• Strong presentation and organizational skills
• ISO 9001:2000, SEI CMMI, and/or Lean/Agile development knowledge and experience preferred
• Computer skills with SE Tools and Microsoft applications preferred
