Director of Environmental Health and Safety
The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON, Inc.) , a continental-scale research platform for understanding and forecasting the impact of climate change, land use change, and invasive species on ecology, has an immediate opening in Washington, DC for a full-time Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S).
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of EH&S is a key senior leadership position that is responsible for developing, implementing and managing a comprehensive EH&S program at NEON. In this challenging role you will create and manage EH&S programs at more than 60 environmental monitoring sites located across the entire United States, including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. You will also be responsible for establishing, deploying and supporting safety programs, standards and training. As the designated safety officer for NEON you will oversee compliance, and protocols and coordinate emergency response and/or evacuation.
Additional duties include traveling to remote locations within the 50 states including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico to identify hazards, evaluate loss potential, and to develop NEON’s emergency response and contingency plans. You will consult with NEON’s Project Manager and Civil Construction Director to formulate strategies and tactics to promote safety awareness, safe work practices and environmental stewardship. Additionally, you will identify and file new/renewal licenses to ensure compliance with OSHA and other federal, state and local regulations and requirements.
The successful candidate will have proven leadership skills to effectively deal with unique and constant challenges including changing work environments and working with a wide range of staff. S/he will possess 7-10 years broad experience in health and safety including overseeing and developing large and site specific safety plans and programs. Preferred qualifications include experience with and willingness to work outdoors in various climates and environments including remote and wilderness areas. Experience with designing safety protocols for towers and large vertical structures, operating and maintaining an ISO14001 system through a full audit cycle, and specialized certifications in safety, industrial health, CPR, AED and first aid also desirable.
