Great Basin Domain

The Great Basin Domain includes parts of seven Western states: Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and California. The NEON candidate core site is located in Utah at Onaqui-Benmore, about 100 km. southwest of Salt Lake City, on land owned by the US Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. Site vegetation features extensive sagebrush steppe transitioning into juniper woodland. The NEON focus in the Great Basin includes land use and invasive species. The Great Basin also forms a research bridge with the Southern Rockies-Colorado Plateau (Domain 13) to study the movement of dust and its impacts across the region.

Representativeness: The Onaqui-Benmore site offers extensive sagebrush steppe transitioning into juniper woodland. The site can represent both low and high elevation ranges.

Unique Feature: Domain 15 is a region of ecological contrasts that is currently experiencing significant ecosystem-scale changes and undergoing rapid urbanization at its margins.
