James Tiedje is a University Distinguished Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics and of Soil Science at Michigan State University. Since 1988 he has been Director of the Center for Microbial Ecology, one of the original NSF Science and Technology Centers. He has 30 years of experience in microbial ecology and physiology research, especially regarding the nitrogen cycle, microbial community dynamics, and biodegradation of environmental pollutants. He is Past President of the International Society of Microbial Ecology and currently President of the American Society for Microbiology.
