Dan Childers is a Professor in the School of Sustainability and Associate Director for Research of the Global Institute of Sustainability at Arizona State University. His research focuses on systems ecology in wetland and aquatic ecosystems, in particular on controls on primary production, biogeochemical cycling, and soil dynamics. He has worked in both forested and herbaceous wetland ecosystems—most recently in the “ciénega” systems of arid southwestern streams—and in many different freshwater and estuarine systems around the world. Dan began his wetland research education as an undergraduate at the University of Virginia, working with [the late] Bill Odum. He conducted his M.S. research on ecosystem modeling and synthesis with the North Inlet LTER Program at the University of South Carolina, then went on to get his Ph.D. from the Center for Wetland Resources at Louisiana State University. Dan spent nearly 15 years at Florida International University in Miami, working largely on Everglades research issues. He was Director of the Florida Coastal Everglades LTER Program from its inception in 2000 until his move to ASU in 2008. Dan has published more than 80 peer‐reviewed articles, won grants that have totaled over $15 million, and advised nearly two dozen Ph.D. and M.S. students.
